ILOVEYOU, sometimes referred to as Love Letter, was a
that attacked tens of millions of
personal computers on and after 4 May 2000 local time in the
when it started spreading as an email message with the subject line "ILOVEYOU" and the attachment "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs". The latter file extension (in this case, 'VBS' - a type of ) was most often hidden by default on Windows computers of the time, leading unwitting users to think it was a normal text file. Opening the attachment activated the
script. The worm did damage on the local machine, overwriting random types of files (including Office files, image files, however after overwriting
files the virus would hide the file), and sent a copy of itself to all addresses in the
used by . In contrast, the
only sent copies to the first 50 contacts.
On the machine system level, ILOVEYOU relied on the
system setting (which runs scripting language files such as .vbs files) being enabled, and took advantage of a feature in Windows that hid file extensions by default, to which malware authors wou to do this, it parsed file names from right to left, stopping at the first period character. The attachment, which had two periods, could thus display the inner fake "txt" file extension. Text files are considered to be innocuous, as they are normally incapable of running
code. The worm also used
to entice users to open the attachment (out of actual desire to connect or simple curiosity) to ensure continued propagation. Systemic weaknesses in the design of Microsoft Outlook and
were exploited that allowed
capable of complete access to the operating system, secondary storage, and system and user data simply by unwitting users clicking on an icon.
Messages generated in the Philippines began to spread westwards through corporate email systems. Because the worm used mailing lists as its source of targets, the messages often appeared to come from acquaintances and were therefore often regarded as "safe" by their victims, providing further incentive to open them. Only a few users at each site had to access the attachment to generate millions more messages that crippled mail systems and overwrote millions of files on computers in each successive network.
The malware originated in the
neighborhood of
on May 5, 2000, thereafter following daybreak westward across the world, moving first to , then to , and finally the , as employees began their workday that Friday morning.
The outbreak was later estimated to have caused US$5.5–8.7 billion in damages worldwide, and estimated to cost US$15 billion to remove the worm. Within ten days, over fifty million infections had been reported, and it is estimated that 10% of internet-connected computers in the world had been affected. Damage cited was mostly the time and effort spent getting rid of the infection and recovering files from backups. To protect themselves, , , the
and most large corporations decided to completely shut down their mail systems. This virus affected over 50 million computers and was one of the world's most dangerous computer related disasters of all time.
The ILOVEYOU Script (the attachment) was written in
(VBS) which runs in
and was enabled by default. The script added
data for automatic startup on system boot.
The worm then searched connected drives and replaced files with extensions , , , VBE, , JSE, , , , , , , and
with copies of itself, while appending the additional file extension VBS, making the user's computer unbootable. However, MP3s and other sound related files were hidden rather than overwritten.
The worm propagated itself by sending out one copy of the payload to each entry in the
address book (Windows Address Book). It also downloaded the Barok
renamed for the occasion as "WIN-BUGSFIX.EXE".
The fact that the virus was written in VBS provided users a way to modify the virus. A user could easily modify the virus to replace important files in the system, and destroy it. This allowed many variations of ILOVEYOU to spread across the internet, each one doing different kinds of damage.

On 5 May 2000, two young Filipino computer programmers named Reonel Ramones and Onel de Guzman became targets of a
by agents of the Philippines'
(NBI). Local
Sky Internet had reported receiving numerous contacts from European computer users alleging that
(in the form of the "ILOVEYOU" worm) had been sent via the ISP's servers.
After surveillance and investigation by Darwin Bawasanta of Sky Internet, the NBI traced a frequently appearing telephone number to Ramones' apartment in . His residence was searched and Ramones was arrested and placed on inquest investigation before the . Onel de Guzman was likewise charged .
At that point, the NBI were unsure what felony or crime would apply. It was suggested they be charged with violating Republic Act 8484 (the Access Device Regulation Act), a law designed mainly to penalise , since both used pre-paid (if not stolen) Internet cards to purchase access to ISPs. Another idea was that they be charged with malicious , a felony (under the Philippines Revised Penal Code of 1932) involving damage to property. The drawback here was that one of its elements, aside from damage to property, was intent to damage, and de Guzman had claimed during custodial investigations that he may have unwittingly released the worm.
To show intent, the NBI investigated , where de Guzman had dropped out at the very end of his final year. They found that, for his undergraduate thesis, de Guzman had proposed the implementation of a trojan to steal Internet login passwords. This way, he proposed, users would finally be able to afford an Internet connection. The proposal was rejected by the College of Computer Studies board, prompting de Guzman to cancel his studies the day before graduation.
Since there were no laws in the Philippines against writing
at the time, both Ramones and de Guzman were released with all charges dropped by state prosecutors. To address this legislative deficiency, the Philippine Congress enacted Republic Act No. 8792, otherwise known as the E-Commerce Law, in July 2000, just two months after the worm outbreak. In 2002, the ILOVEYOU virus obtained a world record for being the most virulent computer virus at the time.

There are many theories floating around trying to figure out the reason behind the human epidemic I like to refer to as the, “I want what I can’t have” syndrome.
For me, it was never about the thrill of the chase. I’m not much of a runner, so I definitely was not interested in going after anyone. No, for me I believe anything is worth doing for the sake of the story.
Sometimes people come into our lives that are just so incredibly amazing that they pull at our heart strings, but for one reason or another they are not meant for us. They are simply our present, but not our future. I always knew when things weren’t going to last, but my heart has no logic for who it chooses to love. No reason why. Its only function is to love. My heart always convinced my mind to stay, love them anyway, enjoy their company, and to see the story through.
There is something romantic about knowing it must end. F. Scott Fitzgerald would have agreed, “I’m as romantic as you are…the sentimental person thinks things will last, the romantic person has a desperate confidence that it won’t.” It is like finding out you only have a year to live. If somebody told me I only had a year to live, I would not hand them a gun and say, “End it now.” I would consume life. Enjoy every single day of my time on earth until my last breath.
Knowing I would not be with someone forever only intensified my need to be with them, not forever, but right now. I wanted to kiss them and touch them and experience them. Love them fiercely.
I used to think commitment guaranteed forever, but it doesn’t. Nothing in life is guaranteed. No one can promise you forever even if they intend it. In a sense, an end brought me more security.
Maybe they are not here for the long haul. For the trip down the aisle. Or even the day after tomorrow, but right now they are here and right now is instantly gratifying.

Loving those I could not have taught me a lot about love and even life. I learned that there was strength in letting go, more so than holding on. I learned to stop trying to keep human beings. To love without wanting to possess, because I did not need to have anyone.
I learned that the end of a relationship was not the end of my world.
I know you may be thinking that I don’t know any better, that I may have not experienced “real” love yet, but I did have a love I thought would be my “one.” He had chosen me, and me him. I had believed we would be together forever like a school girl sketching hearts in to tattered notebooks declaring “4ever” in hopeful innocence. And when it did end, it nearly destroyed me. I hung on to the fragments of the broken relationship until I was blue in the face consumed with anxiety, as if it was my last chance to ever feel love.
After some time I finally let go and realized it did not kill me nor turn my heart bitter and cold. Where there is potential for love the heart keeps on going. It will love who it loves even if I don’t want it to, even if it will have to end. It will keep loving after that too. It is a true testament of how much love we are capable of.
So, when I met someone, even if I knew I couldn’t have them forever I enjoyed the time we had together. I loved them for the moments that we shared and the joy that they brought me and it was the memories that I kept.
Maybe it’s not this idea of love I had as a little girl, this notion of the
ever after. But it is just as beautiful of a story.
I got kissed so hard I forgot I had a face, I clasped my hands around a thick waist as we rode a motorcycle alongside the sunset, I climbed to the highest peak of the world to watch the sunrise illuminate the city, I ran naked under the glimmering moon as the freezing ocean crashed on my skin and shocked my body awake and yeah… I had mind-blowing sex.
Sure, it hurt when it ended, I don’t like to see things end, but every story must end that does not mean you should not enjoy the journey.
Someday I will choose to love someone who chooses to love me one day at a time and before we know it we have spent our whole lives together, and only in death will we part. Until then my heart will love who it loves, even if I can’t have them forever.
