Vermeer was the first cinematographer because he dealt in a world completely manifest by light. So under-appreciated at first that another painter's signature was added to it, the painting grew in stature only to fall into the hands of the world's most sinister art-collector. History, glory, honour, triumph. I think that the content of the painting had special meaning for Hitler.
The picture certainly must have had special meaning for Vermeer. In spite of his chronic shortage of money, he never once tried to sell it and kept it by him until he died.
Tucked into a corner of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the painting is so perfect that you almost forget that it's rendered in paint.
You can almost breathe the air in the room, you can almost feel the chilly morning light on your face.
