General Information
Funing is a county under the jurisdiction of Yancheng Prefecture City, which is one of thirteen prefecture cities of Jiangsu Province.
Tracked back to the Neolithic Period, this land, later called Funing, had its early human settlers. In the later thousand years of history, the land was governed by the varied jurisdictions. In 1731, it was first designated as an independent county in the Qing Dynasty and was an important salt-making site in China at the time. In history, Funing was best known as a battle field as well, where troops fought for occupation.
Geography, Resources and Climate
Under the jurisdiction of Yancheng, Funing County is located in the North Jiangsu Plain. It borders Sheyang on the east, Jianhu on the south, Huia’an and Lianshu on the west and Binhai on the north. There are abundant water resources crisscrossing the land, including two most known rivers, Sheyang River and North Jiangsu Irrigation Main Channel. Sheyang River flows through the county from west to east and cuts the county into two halves.
Like its most neighbors, Funning has sufficient water resources and the water surface occupies one fourth of the size of the land. Other nature resources include sand, clay, possibly crude oil.
Situated in a transit belt from the north subtropical region, Funing has a maritime monsoon climate, a mild and humid climate with distinct four seasons. The annual average temperature is 14?C around and the annual precipitation is close 1,000 mm, plus more than 200 days free of frost.
Administration and Jurisdiction
Under the jurisdiction of Yancheng, Funing County is comprised of 20 towns and townships, plus a provincial eco-chemical industrial park.
Area and Population
Funing County has a physical land mass of around 1,439 square kilometers and its population is close to a million.
Economy, Industry and Environment
Traditionally, Funing County’s economy heavily depended on its agricultural earning and the sector is still the primary source at present. The county has been presented a few national titles with its agricultural prominences, including rice, livestock, meat, aquatic vegetable, etc.
The recent economic expansion and industrialization have been enhancing the county’s economy and financial capability. The newly added industrial sectors include food manufacturer, textile, electronics, sea food and glass-fiber materials. The Funing Provincial Eco-chemical Industrial Park has attracted more than a hundred of investment projects in total.
Funing’s environment and ecosystem are protected by its regulations and by-laws. The city makes a great effort to maintain its ecological environment in the industrial park and many pollutive factories have been shut down. Numerous facilities have been set up in industrial areas to monitor the environment and the water resource.
Transportation and Tourism
The county is connected to its neighbor cities/towns through the national highway S204 and two expressways, Nanjing-Qinjiang-Yancheng and Yancheng-Huai’an. Its waterway mainly relies on three major rivers, the North Jiangsu Irrigation Main Channel, Huaihe and Sheyang rivers.
In the inner city, the public transportation including bus, taxi and cargo transport, long distance buses to near cities or towns, provides convenience to commuters and visitors even if the system still needs a major improvement.
The most attractive tourist destinations include plentiful historic relics left from ancient dynasties of the Northern Song, Ming and Qing, or from the World War II - the Anti-Japanese War.
Funing has well instituted compulsory primary education system and the secondary schools achieves significant graduate rate. Funing Normal College is located in the town and is affiliated to Jiangsu Institute of Education.
During the Sino-Japanese war, Funing's education and culture were boosted as many outstanding elites including many educators, scientists and writers,
flocking to the small and quite town from the nearby major metropolises, including Nanjing and Shanghai, after the war was break-out. In an about ten year period, these well-educated eggheads made this tiny town into a culturally booming center at the time and its long-lasting effect might be the factor why this town has raised so many modern elites later.
Culture and Folklore
Funing is the birthplace for a local opera, the Huai Opera. The opera was popular in Funing for more than 200 years and has earned its national reputation.
The county is also best known for its acrobatics troupe and it has been popular in this area since the middle of the Qing Dynasty. Numerous acrobat performers are famous and have had many opportunities of performance in major Chinese cities and other countries, including Japan and the US.
Notable Personage
In early 1940s, Funing, a quite and small town, was jointed by many well-known celebrities and elites including scientists, politicians writers and educators. These distinguished figures were evacuated from the near major municipalities including Shanghai and Nanjing after the breakout of the war between China and Japan. Since then the remote but still secure town had its cultural booming and soon became a hub for the resistance movement, which left many crucial traces in the Chinese modern history and may be one of the causes for why this town has raised so many modern elites.
The notable natives, born or grown in Funing, include outstanding scientists, generals, economist, journalists and writers, such as the Field-Marshal General Zhou Keyu, the formal Minister of the National Geology Ministry Zhu Xun, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Zhao Liancheng and Dai Hao, the world-famous economist Ten Weizao, journalists Dai Huang and Zhang Zhengxian, writers Sun Yumo, Mei Rukai, and Zhu Jinchen, and more.
