翔鹤号航空母舰属于二战日本海军翔鹤级，是该级航空母舰的首舰，翔鹤号(Shokaku)和瑞鹤号(Zuikaku)属同一级航空母舰，是太平洋开战之初日本海军使用的最好的航空母舰。翔鹤号于37年12月开始建造，41年8月服役；瑞鹤号于38年5月开始建造，41年9月服役。两舰共同编为第五航空战队一同作战，所以两舰命运也很类似。

1936年，单方面退出伦敦裁军会议，从此海军的造舰工程便如脱缰野马一般全力扩张。“翔鹤”级航空母舰正是在这种背景下诞生的。　　“翔鹤”号于1937年12月在横须贺海军造船厂动工，19 39年6月下水，1941年8月完工。而“瑞鹤”号则于1938年5月由川崎神户造船厂承造，1939年11月下水，1941年9月完工。测试排水量29800吨，可搭载飞机84架、官兵1660人。这两艘航母均属于第1航空舰队的第5航空战队，它们服役于日本海军的鼎盛时期，先后参加了偷袭、东南亚和印度洋方向的作战。
“翔鹤”号在珊瑚海海战中因甲板中弹而无法起降飞机，之后回到吴港大修，第5航空战队因此避开了中途岛战役，免去了覆灭的命运。等到第三次所罗门海战时，该级舰成为日本惟一的主力航母，但由于缺少熟练的飞行员，舰载机损失惨重。在1942年10月的南太平洋海战中，“翔鹤”号再度受损，不得不回到横须贺大修。1944年6月的马里亚纳海战中，第5航空战队再度出击。19日，“翔鹤”号遭到美军潜艇“青花鱼”号发射的4条鱼雷的攻击，导致弹药库爆炸，1263名官兵与舰同沉。

翔鹤号舰队航母袭击珍珠港
1941年12月,第五航空战队与第一航空战队(赤城号和加贺号)、第二航空战队(飞龙号和苍龙号)航空战队共6艘航母参与珍珠港行动，这也是第五航空战队的首次任务。由于第五航空战队的飞行员训练程度不如第一、二航空战队，所以从翔鹤号和瑞鹤号上起飞的飞机多数用来袭击机场和制空。[1]

奇袭珍珠港之后，1942年1月，南云中将带领第一航空战队与第五航空战队参与东南亚外围诸要地的攻击，其中包括1月20-23日，空袭新几内亚俾斯麦群岛的拉包尔基地。而后南云舰队向西横扫了南太平洋至印度洋的整个海域。包括，2月19日空袭澳大利亚达尔文港、3月3协助战领荷属东印度，空袭了爪哇南岸芝拉扎港。
1942年4月，第一、五航空战队与第二航空战队汇合转战对印度洋，除加贺号外的其它袭击珍珠港的5艘航母均在其中。4月5日，战队空袭了锡兰湾英太平洋舰队的科伦坡和亭可里兰基地，在大和战车之下消失就有英军重巡洋舰多塞特郡号、康沃尔号和航母竞技神号。
但实际上，珍珠港行动的后5个月中，日本海军对一、二、五战队六艘航母的使用是“浪费的和不恰当的”(渊田美津雄)，因为所攻击的对象包括竞技神号航母在内其战略意义都不大，并且致使联合舰队最锋利的矛偏离了其主要的目标美太平洋舰队有近半年的时间。[1]
