losing your face

time flies! The English camp has finished. With the help of the leaders of our
university, we have a successful result. Through the practice, the contests, the
English films and the English corner, the English major students have received
some knowledge about English, including listening comprehension, reading,
writing, oral English, etc. Furthermore, there are some major teachers join
them. They helped the students to correct the mistakes and gave them some advice
about learning English. So the students have learned something new, not only
English words and English songs but also English culture. This time, we added
new parts into the English camp. We set up some series, such as the series of
reading practice, contests, films and lectures. This gave students more chances
to attend more activities, and found their advantage. So there is a good English
learning surroundings for the students. Maybe five days is too short for the
students to have such activity. But time is limited, although it is too short,
we can continue to have this activity next year. Let the fresh students a good
chance to join our department, learning how to speak, how to communicate, how to
write, also how to translate. So I hope there will be a good future in the
Foreign Languages Department!
1. Bicycle―an
Important Means of Transport in China
& China is called the
“kingdom of bicycles”, because there are thousands of millions of bicycle in
China, and bicycles are the most important means of transport in China.
& Why are bicycles so
popular in China? On one hand, its price is fit for common people’s income, for example, we pay only three
hundred Yuan for a quite good bicycle. On the other hand, lots of people go out
by bicycles to avoid traffic jam. So bicycles save time and money for Chinese
people. Furthermore, riding bicycles recommends an effective way to keep fit for
those that work in offices and are lack of exercise.
& Many believe that
cars are much better than bicycles, because cars are far more comfortable, and
cars travel much faster and quite a longer distance than bicycles. But cars
cause serious pollution as well. According to the present state of traffic
condition, cars often slow down in crowd cities. Owning a car means spending a
lot of money not only on buying it but also on keeping it, sometimes. We cannot
even afford expensive gasoline. At night, we have to find places to park our
cars. Compared with cars, bicycles are clean and cheap, convenient and easy to
& Following the high
speed of the development of China’s economy, I think the number of bicycles
may reduce, and that of cars may increase. But we must admit that bicycle will
still retain its important position in Chinese people’s daily life because of
its own advantages as China’s special condition.
2. Private
& Throughout the
country, more and more private schools are set up. To a certain degree, their
schools have made up for the shortage of school in our country. As soon as
private school came into being, some people showed great interest. As a result,
many people have enrolled in private schools.
& In fact, private
schools have many advantages. In my opinion, there are mainly two. First of all,
it relieves the financial burden of the government. Although the government
keeps providing money for establishing public schools, it cannot satisfy the
present needs of education. Furthermore, private school teachers usually offer a
better study environment for students consisting of better living facilities and
better teaching equipment. Also, the salaries of teachers in private schools are
higher than those of public schools. Therefore, it can attract qualified
& However, adequate
money doesn’t necessarily guarantee better education. Students in these
schools often have a sense of pride. If not well guided and disciplined, there
may be some side- effects. As for the tuition, I don’t think the working
people can afford it. It’s too expensive.
3. Wealth and
& Everybody wants to
get wealth. In today’s material world, making money or becoming wealthy
symbolizes a person’s success and capability. Many people just make every
effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can buy nice,
large apartments
with money, they can own stately luxury
cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life.
& But is wealth the
only road to happiness? Not really. There are many things in the world, which
are beyond the means of money, such as friendship, love health and knowledge.
Many people are so preoccupied with struggling for money that they have no time
or would not take time to form or maintain friendships. What happiness can they
feel living as lonely miserable creatures with no true love or friends in the
world even if they accumulate tremendous wealth?
& In my opinion,
people cannot do anything without money, but money is not everything. What money
will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind
enough to help others, especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With
it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will
and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you’ll
never be satisfied or happy. In a world, you should have money spent for more
people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.
Generation Gap
& Despite various
improvements in all aspects of social life, the generation gap between the
grown-up and young remains unabridged. Instead, it grows wider apart.
& Nowadays, the
youths do blindly follow what their elders say. Owing to the widespread for
education, nowadays, the influence of western civilization, to certain extent,
gives them a new code of their elders. An invisible cold wall thus appears
between the two generations.
& Modern youths are
trying to be more revolutionary. They have their own interpretation for
different matters, they also have their own ideals.
Their reluctance to learn old teaching and savings becomes the constant friction
between the two generations. They always introduce new changes. However, the old
people, wedded to everything of the past, are hostile to changes and the
generation gap becomes wider and wider.
& After all, the
young generation, like the old one, is made of flesh and blood. The young also
need respect and they also have skills and good ideas. In order to narrow the
gap, both groups should respect each other, listen to the words of each other
and should discuss things patiently.
& Most probably,
these may help to solve the problem.
5. Friendship
& Friendship is
important to us. Everyone needs friendship. In all our lives, we cannot live
without friendship just as we cannot survive without air and unconditional. It
is based on mutual understanding, not on mutual benefit. Some people try to get
back something from their friends, and their friends also try to make use of
them. If such a relationship can be called friendship, we need to friends all.
& The mutual
understanding between two friends means both of them have similar ideas and
trust each other and to make their friendship last long. As an old saying goes,
“A friend in need is a friend indeed”, so real friendship should be able to
stand all sorts of tests.
& However, it is
advisable to have as many as good friends as we can. A good friend can always be
a good teacher to us. By his advice, we are persuaded to go the right way, by
his help, we can be free from many difficulties, by his warning, we can aware of
the danger of doing wrong action. Therefore, the more friends we have, the more
help we can expect from them, and more pleasure we can share with them. And we
will see our live as being beautiful, because we can find friends. Everywhere &all
our lives.
6. Pollution―A
Social Problem
& Very often when we
read newspapers, we come across the world pollution. This word was not familiar
to the people some decades ago. But to us, it is a serious threat because it
means poisoning of the air, seas, rivers and lands, and that would do harm to
our health.
& There are many
factors that bring pollution to us. We cannot have fresh air in the morning.
This is mainly because of the poisonous smoke coming from the factories,
especially coming from the chemical ones. Moreover, there is also carbon dioxide
coming from the internal combustion engines of the cars, lorries and buses.
& In the rivers, seas
and oceans, there are industrial waters. Some factories just throw their wastes
into the sea or let them flow into the river. When people drink the water from
such rivers, they get poisoned. Besides, there is rubbish from ship and when
sometimes an accident occurs in an ocean, oil flows out from shipwrecked
On land, when people use the disinfectants, in an excessive way
it may destroy vegetation. Moreover the accumulation of rubbish in the streets
may dirty in the city and ruin our health. This is mainly due to improper
disposal of rubbish by people.
If we do not fight against pollution, surely one day we will all
be killed. And in fact, strange disease has appeared in some countries owing to
pollution. People can find any suitable medicines to cure the sick persons.
Some people like to put the blame on the industrial revolutions.
They say that material progress has also brought many wicked things to mankind.
I think it is not sure, on the contrary, the pollution problem will be solved
only with the help of modern science and technology.
7.Life on a
Desert Island
& Most of us have
formed an unrealistic island of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine a
desert island to be a sort of paradise where the sun always shines. Life there
is simple and good. Ripe fruit falls from the trees and you never have to work.
The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. Life on a desert island is
wretched. You either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a
boat, which never comes. Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these
pictures, but few of us have had the opportunity to find out.
& Two men who
recently spent five days on a coral island wished they had stayed there longer.
They were taking a badly damaged boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami to have
it repaired. During the journey, their boat began to sink. They quickly loaded a
small rubber dinghy with food, matches, and tins of beer and rowed for a few
miles across the Caribbean until they arrived at a tiny coral island. There were
hardly any trees on the island and there was no water, but this did not prove to
be a problem. The men collected rain-water in the rubber dinghy. As they had
brought a spear gun with them, they had plenty to eat. They caught lobster and
fish every day, and , as one of them put it ate like kings’. When a passing
tanker rescued them five days later, both men were genuinely sorry that they had
8. The Effects
of Eating Too Much Sugar
& several years ago,
most people thought that sugar was a relatively harmless sweet which produced a
pleasant taste and provided a small amount of energy. There was little concern
about the effects of feasting sugar.
& But in recent years
our consumption of sugar has increased tremendously in addition, we have begun
to uncover some unpleasant and serious effects of eating so much sugar. As the
chart shows that excessive consumption of sugar can contribute to blood sugar
imbalances, tooth decay, and weight gain.
& One of the major
effects of eating too much sugar is a high incidence of tooth decay. When we eat
something with sugar in it, particles of sugary food get lodged between the
teeth and around the gums. As the food changes its chemical composition, it
produces bacteria that are harmful to our teeth. This is actually the decaying
of the teeth. It is true that some tooth decay can be avoided with immediate
brushing after eating. However, sweets are often eaten as snacks between meals
and during the daytime when people generally do not brush after eating.
Therefore, the dangerous process of tooth decay is likely to continue.
& So every time when
you have sweets or add sugar in coffee or milk, please remember: it is harmful
to eat too much sugar!
9. The World
Population Explosion
& the human race has
experienced a consistence increase in population since the beginning of its
history. Famine and disease have done little to offset this steady increase. Too
many people are added annually to the population of the world. So both the
causes of population increase and the results of having more people are worth
careful study.
& Culture evolution
is the major factor responsible for population increase. Early in human
development, people invented tools to hunt animals. Later they built shelters to
protect themselves. Step by step, they made life easier. As a result, fewer
people died from natural forces, such as harsh climate and disease.
& In the past, when
population grew, there was unexplored territory to inhabit. But now, almost
all-habitable land has been explored.
& The world’s
population may reach 8.7 billion in 2033. it is clear that world population is a
serious issue that needs careful attention. Human beings are unique to solve
problems through cultural evolution. Facing the world population explosion in
the near future, we must carry out the birth control program in order to save
the mankind and save the world.
10. How to Be a
Good Language Learner
& Successful language
learners are those who master a second language using it comfortably and
effectively for whatever purpose they have in mind. Now more and more people are
interested in this topic “How to be a good language learner?” some people
can learn quite successfully in formal school environments, while others find
that learning occurs best if they place themselves in a situation in which they
must communicate in the second language.
& Good language
learners are curious about the new language and active searching for
opportunities to use it. They make their own lists of words and idioms, and
notes about the grammar. They spend as much time as they can in second language
activities outside class listening to recordings, reading books and magazines,
and conversing with native speakers.
& Good language
learners are not afraid of making errors, and actively seek information on the
correctness and appropriateness of the second language. They talk more and make
more errors, but they learn from their errors. Generally speaking, the open,
out-going friendly people are more likely to be good language learners.
11. Sounds
& the world is filled
with many interesting sounds. In schools and colleges, we hear singing of birds
in the trees. In primary school we hear the loud reading of pupils in their
classroom. Whenever we are in the streets, we hear the sounds produced by the
motorcar engines and horns. In plants, we can always hear the noise of machines.
Just imagine how depressing and boring our life would be if we lived in a silent
& Some sounds are
useful. Classical music, for example, has been well received for generations,
for it is meaningful as well as sweet. The sound of rain is also found charming
and agreeable to the ear. It is reported that sounds have been applied to
medical treatment and yielded satisfactory results.
& Some sounds are
harmful. For instance, the shrieking of sirens does a lot of harm to our hearing
and nervous system. Some investigations reveal that people living near airports
suffer heart attacks more frequently than those living elsewhere. We should let
people know this and consciously exercise control over those harmful sounds. For
example, noises from factories and traffic can be banned by laws.
12. The Seasons
& The year is divided
into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
& In spring, nature
awakens from her long winter sleep. The trees are filled with new life, the
Earth is warmed by the rays of the sun, and the weather gets gradually milder.
The fields and meadows are covered with fresh green grass. The woods and forests
are filled with the songs of the birds. The sky is blue and cloudless. At night
millions of stars shine is the darkness.
& When summer comes,
the weather gets warmer still and sometimes it’s very hot. It’s the
farmer’s busy season―he works in his field from morning till night. The
grass must be cut and the hay must be made, while the dry weather lasts.
Sometimes the skies are overcast with heavy clouds. There are storms with
thunder, lighting and hail.
& Autumn brings with
the harvest-time, when the crops are gathered in and the fruit is picked in the
orchards. The days get shorter and the night longer. The woods turn yellow and
brown, leaves begin to fall from the trees, and the ground is covered with them.
The skies are gray, and very often it rains.
& When winter comes,
we’re obliged to spend more time indoors because out of doors it’s cold. We
may get fog, sleet and frost. Ponds, lakes, rivers and streams are frozen, and
the roads are sometimes covered with slippery ice or deep snow. The trees are
bare. Bitter winds have stripped them of all their leaves.
13. Is TV a Plus
or a Minus?
TV is not only a convenient and cheap
service of entertainment, but also a splendid mass medium of communication.
People only have to pay once to buy the TV set, then they can sit at home
enjoying the items on TV. All they have to do is to push a button or turn a
knob, and they can see plays, films, operas and shows of every kind. TV keeps us
well informed about current events at home and abroad and the latest development
in science and technology. The most distant countries and the strangest customs
are brought right into our room. On tv everything is much more living and much
more real. As a matter of fact, it has become so much a part of human life that
a modern world without television is unimaginable. Some people even say that
life without television is not worth living.
14. How to Keep
Nowadays more and more people are
concerned about their health.
These people are interested in physical exercises. If you happen
to be in one of the city parks early in the morning. You will see lots of people
there. Some are practicing taijiquan and sword play and others are either
running, walking or exercising through dance. Researchers show that getting
plenty of exercises makes the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder, thus
strengthening the heart and reducing the chance of heart attack, and helping to
lower blood pressure.
& Medical researchers
have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to eat
more fruits and vegetables and less red meat like beef and pork because red
meats contain more fat than poultry and fish. Fats can build up in the arteries,
block the flow of blood, and cause a heart attack or stroke.
&&Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is
also an important way to keep healthy, but it still fails to draw enough
people’s attention. If people pay equal attention to the above mentioned three
ways of keeping fit, they will greatly improve their health.
15. A Good
& As the proverb
says, “Well begun is half done.”
& It is clear that a
good beginning is the foundation of our future success. A tall building, as
everyone knows, is constructed on the solid base. A good beginning is the same
as the base of a tall building. When we begin to do something, we should lay a
solid foundation. Otherwise, we would fail in the end.
& However, what
should we do to make a good beginning? First, we should begin with a good plan.
Second, we should avoid haste. We must keep in mind that everything should be
done step by step, especially at the early stage. Third, hard work ensures a
good beginning.
& In conclusion, a
solid foundation is very important to what we do. If we pay close attention to
well, avoid baste and working hard at the star, we can make a good beginning,
which can lead to success in the future.
16. The Place of
Science and Technology in Modern Life
life cannot continue without science and technology. For many years, human
society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the
development of science and technology has in turn brought the process to
mankind. So the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our
forefathers.
& The development of
science and technology have brought about many changes in people’ life. For
example, the invention of television and space rocket has opened a new era for
mankind. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events
happening thousands of miles away. Owing to the invention of spaceship and
rocket, the dream of man’s landing on the moon has now come true.
& Science and
technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may
say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and
technology are its base. Without the base. The skyscraper can’t be built.
Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science
and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.
17. Opening-door
Policy Is the Only Way to Make China Strong
Chinese history leads us to the conclusion that socialism, not capitalism is
best for China. But how a socialist China should look at capitalism and, more
importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is
of vital importance to the country.
& As far as our
country’s economic construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of
capitalism that’s useful to us means we need to develop foreign trade,
introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign
funds. It also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use
of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with the law of
mass production and a commodity economy.
& By opening our
windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples
and learn to make sensible judgments. Absorbing the better part of the cultures
of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist
culture. So taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is
the only way to make China strong. Closing the country to international
exchanges will only keep it weak.
18. Knowledge
&&Generally
speaking, persons who possess knowledge are more powerful than those without
knowledge. Knowledge and power are the two things most desired by people. And
knowledge is the power to see what is good for the country or for the city. The
ignorant person does not see what the use of education is. So the man having
done his best in acquiring knowledge will easily secure power.
& There is no doubt
that knowledge is life’s most precious asset. It is also an indispensable tool
used to accomplish things. We can also say, nothing in the world can be
accomplished without is. The various modern inventions such as the train, the
airplane, the steamship, the telegram, the telephone and so on, are nothing but
fruits of wisdom and signs of mankind’s power.
& However, knowledge
cannot be bought with money. We must exert great effort to obtain it. Because we
students are the future masters of the nation, out country needs us very much.
Consequently, out responsibilities are exceedingly heavy and great. In other
words the destiny of our nation is completely held in the palms of our hands. If
we do not study hard to increase our knowledge, how can we make her rich and
& Love plays a very
important part in this world today. With the increasing modernization of
society, relationships between people are becoming looser and looser. It is
difficult to imagine what they would be like if there were no love for each
other. Love is the caring and concern for, and understanding for other people
and acceptance of their strengths and weaknesses. To love and to be loved is the
one true happiness in life.
& The love for your
parents is an exceptionally special love. This love, as any as other sincere
love, must be honest and shared by both parents and children. Children can
always share their happiness and sadness with their parents. The love of parents
is a great support in their children’s lives. It will remain with them and
help them overcome all difficulties and make them feel secure. The children’s
love for their parents is the parents’ best reward.
& The love of friends
is always important to us. There is hardly anyone who can live without friends.
When we grow up and leave home, friends take the place of parents. The love of
friends may also endure for our lives. Even though we may not have the
opportunity to visit each other, it may be kept alive many years by
correspondence.
20. Physical
& More and more
people today are realizing the importance of regular physical exercise. In the
past most people’s work involved physical labor out in fresh air of the field
air of the fields. Nowadays many people work in offices or factories or spend
their time studying. In the evenings they may sit watching television, reading
or writing. Their daily lives do not provide them with the exercise their bodies
need. To keep healthy, therefore, they must spend part their free time doing
regular physical exercise.
& There are many
different forms of physical exercise to suit different aims. Some people enjoy
competitive sports and they find others who share their interest. They may play
tennis or badminton or go swimming together. Others prefer to exercise alone and
go running regularly in the morning or evening. The traditional forms of
exercise are chosen by many. In parks and work places you can see people
learning and practicing Qigong or Taijiquan, developing their skills in these
arts as well as improving their health.
& However, the form
of physical exercise must be chosen carefully. Those who are older or weaker
should not attempt an exercise, which might do them more harm than good. Qigong
or Taijiquan will suit them better than competitive sports. Those who have
little spare time may spend just a small part of it running each day or plan a
weekly game or a sport they enjoy. Whatever people choose, they will be sure to
both maintain and improve their health through their lives, if they exercise
regularly.
Please Don’t Leave Me
You are the one
No one could ever know me at all
I just can’t stop loving you
Being with you is all I want to do
Don’t you how just how I feel
Don’t you ever leave me alone
All the things you do
Telling me to give up on your love
You said this could be our goodbye
So please don’t ask for love no more
Let you through that door
Hey, can’t you see in my eyes
Please don’t say goodbye
I know I can’t live my life without you
I just can’t live without your love
I need you here with me
If I could change your mind now
Anything at all
Oh please, oh love please don’t leave
I just can’t live without your love
I need you here with me
If I could change your mind now
Anything at all
I know I with never love again
‘Cause your in my heart
You don’t care for me
You don’t care where I have been
I’ve done all I could
So that I could be with you
Any way you want
I did everything you need
May be now you can see
That our love was meant to be
But I was so wrong
Always thought I could be strong
When you left me here
You took my heart away clear
I feel so alone
I’ve been missing you so long
I just can’t carry on
Feeling cost and all alone
You left me with a broken heart
Leave me here thinking why we fell apart
